IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) is an email access protocol used to configure mail accounts with local or remote web servers. It is one of the most widely used protocols for receiving emails and is supported by all modern clients and web servers. When you move to a new server or email provider, your existing emails will not be accessible until you migrate them to the new mailbox.

What is Email Migration?

Email migration, or mailbox migration, refers to the process of transferring email messages from one mail client to another. To copy emails from one server to another using IMAP, both servers must support the IMAP protocol. Verpex servers support IMAP, making them suitable for this purpose.

When switching to a new hosting provider, you may need to transfer your emails as well. If you're moving between cPanel-based hosting providers, you can leverage the full cPanel backup to migrate all settings. This method simplifies the transfer of emails between matching IMAP accounts.

Recommended Tool

For a seamless IMAP transfer, you can use this free IMAP tool: . It comes highly recommended for its reliability.

Requirements for IMAP Email Transfer

To transfer IMAP emails using an IMAP Transfer tool, you will need:

  • An IMAP-capable local email client (e.g., Thunderbird or Outlook).

  • SMTP Server: Your cPanel account hostname/IP address.

  • IMAP Server: Your cPanel account hostname/IP address.

  • Username: Your full email address (e.g., email@domain.com).

  • Password: The password for your email account set during the cPanel creation process (ensure the passwords for both accounts match).

  • IMAP Port: 993

  • SMTP Port: 465

  • TLS/SSL Support: Disabled

Steps to Copy IMAP Emails

  1. Download and Install an Email Client: Install Thunderbird or Outlook.

  2. Start the IMAP to IMAP Migration Tool: Launch the tool.

  3. Configure Email Account(s): Set up your email account(s) with the previous hosting provider's settings (email address and password).

  4. Create Email Account in Clouduxe: Log in to your Clouduxe cPanel and create the same email account with identical spelling and password. Remember to change the password after migration. For help, follow our tutorial on How to Change your Webmail Password in cPanel.

  5. Enter Source and Destination IMAP Credentials: Input the credentials for both the source and destination IMAP accounts, including IMAP server details and port numbers.

  6. Choose Folders for Migration: Select which folders you want to migrate.

  7. Initiate Migration: Click the next button to start migrating emails from IMAP to IMAP account.

  8. Export Emails: Once the process is completed, proceed to export IMAP emails to the new account.

  9. Add IMAP Email Account: Add the IMAP email account you want to transfer emails to in your email client.

  10. Repeat for Each Folder: Repeat the steps for every folder you wish to copy.

This method copies all messages from your current host to your Clouduxe cPanel email account. Once completed, your transfer will be successful.

Post-Migration Steps

The duration of the extraction process depends on the number of emails and your internet speed, so be patient. After successfully completing the email transfer, allow some time to ensure everything is functioning correctly. You can then safely remove the old email account (mail@domain.com) and continue using your Clouduxe mail accounts.

Update MX Records

To host your domain's email with Verpex, you will need to update your domain's MX records. More information about MX configuration can be found here.

Preventing Email Loss

To avoid losing emails during the transfer, consider creating a forwarder on the old hosting server. This will redirect emails to a third-party email account, allowing you to keep a copy of messages sent to your old email account during the migration period.

Always back up your emails before initiating the transfer to prevent any data loss.
