You need at least one saved address before you can place an order. With none on file, the Billing address step of checkout says "You don't have any saved addresses. Add one to continue." and Place order stays disabled, so this page is the only way forward. See Placing an order.

The address is also what your invoice is issued to, and what the tax on it is worked out from.

Adding an address

Add address opens "Add billing address". The dialog says what the address is for: "Used on invoices and to determine taxes / regional pricing."

FieldRequiredNotes

Address line 1Yes
Address line 2No

State / regionFor some countriesSee below
The Add billing address dialog, filled in. City sits beside Postal code and Country beside State / region; only the fields marked (optional) can be left blank. Example view.

State and region

State / region is a picker of the states the platform holds for the country you chose, never a free-text box. A typed string is dropped in transit, which is how a visibly filled-in form can still come back saying a region is required.

  • Countries that have a state list require one. Missing gives "Please pick a state / region.", with "Required for this country" against the field.
  • Countries with no state list hide the picker and show "Not applicable".
  • Changing the country clears a state that does not belong to the new one, so set the country first.
  • A state that does not belong to the country gives "That state doesn't belong to the selected country."
State / region takes its shape from the country. With no country it waits; with a country that has a state list it becomes a picker and is required; with a country that has none it reads Not applicable. Example view.

Editing and removing

Edit on an address card reopens the same form as "Edit address".

The trash button opens "Delete address?" with "This address will no longer be available when issuing invoices or creating orders."

Which address an order uses

You pick it at checkout, from the Billing address list on the checkout page. Every saved address is offered there, and Add new on that step brings you back to this page.

The Default badge marks the address checkout starts on when the order does not already carry one. Nothing on this page moves that badge, so if you want a different address on an order, choose it at checkout.

Where the address on an invoice comes from. Checkout offers every saved address and starts on the Default one, and the one you pick is what the invoice is issued to. With nothing saved, the order cannot be placed until you add an address. Illustration.
