Renewal and cancellation are billing controls, so they live on the server's Overview tab rather than in the billing area.
The Lifecycle card
The Lifecycle card holds every renewal fact for the service: Billing cycle, Renews (the date the current term ends), Recurring price, and the Auto-renew switch.
The switch only appears while the service is active. On a pending or suspended service it is not rendered at all, so its absence is not a sign that something is wrong.
Turning auto-renew off
With auto-renew on, the next term is invoiced automatically and the service continues.
Turning it off opens a confirmation, "Turn off auto-renew?", with "Keep auto-renew" and "Turn off". Turning it back on applies immediately, with no confirmation.
What auto-renew off actually means:
- No further invoice is issued for this service.
- The service stays active until the date shown under Renews, then expires.
- Nothing is deleted at the moment you flip the switch.
- You can switch it back on at any point before that date.
A service with auto-renew off carries an Auto-renew off chip in your services list, so you can spot one that is quietly heading for expiry.
When a renewal invoice appears
Renewal invoices are issued against the Renews date and land in your invoice list with their own issued and due dates. They are ordinary invoices: every payment route on Paying an invoice works on them, including wallet credit.
If you would rather pay ahead of the due date, Renew early on the Lifecycle card issues the next term's invoice now and sends you to your unpaid invoices. It issues the invoice only. It does not take payment.
A renewal invoice is charged on its due date without you doing anything if you have a default saved card. That is what auto-pay means on Payment methods, and a card gets saved by paying an invoice with it. Keeping wallet credit topped up is the other way to have renewals settle themselves.
If a renewal invoice goes unpaid
Once an unpaid invoice passes its due date it moves to the Overdue tab in Invoices. If it stays unpaid, the service is suspended.
A suspended service shows an amber banner on every tab reading "This service is suspended. Settle any overdue invoices to restore server controls." with a "View unpaid invoices" link.
The suspension is enforced, not cosmetic. While it is in place, power actions, rebuilds, the root password reset, the console, and SSH key changes are all refused. The buttons still render and still respond to a click; what comes back is the lock message rather than the action.
The Lifecycle card thins out at the same time. The Auto-renew switch, Renew early, and the Cancel service card all render only while the service is active, so on a suspended service none of the three are on the page. Settling the overdue invoice is what brings the lifecycle controls and the server controls back together.
Cancelling a service
The Cancel service card sits below the Lifecycle card, with a "Cancel service" button.
The dialog is titled Cancel, followed by the name of the service, and asks two questions:
- "Why are you cancelling?" is required and must be at least 5 characters. A few words is enough, but an empty or one-word answer is rejected both in the browser and on the server.
- "Anything we could have done better?" is optional feedback.
The buttons are "Keep service" and "Cancel at period end".
The request is scoped to this one service. Other services on the same account are not affected.
Cancellation always takes effect at the end of the term
There is no immediate cancellation, and no option anywhere that produces one. Other copy in the panel implies a choice between cancelling at period end and cancelling now; the request that is actually sent has no such setting, so whichever wording you read, the outcome is the same. The service runs until the date shown under Renews, then does not renew.
If you need it ended sooner than that, submit the cancellation first, then open a support ticket asking for it to be expedited. Ending a term early is something the team does by hand.
Withdrawing a cancellation request
Once a request is in, the card changes to "Cancellation requested" and shows when it was made, along with a "Keep my service" button. That button withdraws the pending request and the service goes back to renewing normally.
You can withdraw at any point before the term ends. After that there is nothing left to withdraw.
